We Have Detected Highly Convincing Counterfeits of a Silver Proof Coin

At our Bratislava branch, we encountered highly convincing counterfeits of a silver proof coin that were presented as official products of the renowned Perth Mint. This case demonstrates that even perfectly crafted coins can be sophisticated forgeries that only an experienced expert equipped with professional tools can uncover.

Multiple Pieces of Highly Convincing Counterfeits

Several silver coins were brought in for purchase, all of which appeared at first glance to be genuine proof-quality products. They exhibited high-quality surface finishing, mirror-like fields, and sharp relief – exactly as one would expect from authentic coins issued by a reputable mint.

We Have Never Encountered Counterfeits of Silver Coins Before

This case is highly unusual. Counterfeiting silver investment coins is generally not profitable, as silver has a significantly lower value compared to gold. In practice, we mostly encounter counterfeits of gold investment coins or rare historical pieces, where the economic motivation for forgery is much higher. Although cheap imitations of silver coins commonly appear online – often sold through platforms such as AliExpress – these are usually easy to identify at first glance due to poor craftsmanship, incorrect weight, or obvious design flaws. The counterfeits we encountered this time, however, are on a different level. Their execution is much closer to the original, which significantly increases the risk that they may circulate unnoticed. And because multiple pieces appeared at once, it is likely that more such counterfeits may surface in the market.

Professional Intuition as the First Indicator

Despite their convincing appearance, our experts noticed something unusual. Daily work with dozens or even hundreds of coins develops a natural instinct that alerts them to subtle discrepancies in surface reflection, texture, or the overall “feel” of a coin. Because suspicions were justified, we decided to examine the coins thoroughly.

Weight Check: The First Technical Indicator

After removing the coins from their capsules, we weighed them precisely. Each one was approximately 0.3 grams lighter than the standard weight of a one-ounce silver coin. A weight deviation alone may not confirm a counterfeit, but combined with visual doubts, it is an important warning sign.

    Note on handling proof coins

Under normal circumstances, proof coins should not be removed from their capsules to avoid damage. In this case, removing them was necessary for accurate technical analysis due to justified suspicion of counterfeiting.

    Spectral Analysis: The Key Discovery

The next step was an XRF spectral analysis, which confirmed that the coins did not contain the composition of fine silver. Measured values:

    • silver: 0.2 %
    • copper: over 78 %
    • zinc: almost 20 %
    • nickel: 1.4 %

These values clearly show that the coins have no connection to authentic 999/1000 silver products.

Cutting the Coin: A Supplemental Analysis of the Counterfeit

As a supplementary test, we cut one of the coins. The results showed that:

    • the core consisted of a copper-zinc alloy,
    • the silver surface layer was extremely thin,
    • the proof effect was solely a surface imitation.

Cutting the coin visually confirmed what the XRF results had already revealed.

    Why This Case Matters

    This case is exceptional because:

    • it involved multiple counterfeit pieces,
    • the proof finish appeared extremely convincing,
    • the packaging imitated original capsules,
    • visually, the counterfeits were nearly indistinguishable from genuine coins,
    • the counterfeiter invested unusual effort for a low-value commodity.

All of this suggests that sophisticated counterfeits may appear even in the silver coin market.

Why You Should Purchase Investment Coins Only from Experts

    This case clearly shows that:

    • appearance alone is not enough,
    • technical testing is essential,
    • expert intuition can reveal subtle irregularities,
    • professional experience is irreplaceable.

Investors should always buy from verified experts who guarantee the authenticity and origin of every coin.

    Conclusion

This unusual occurrence of silver coin counterfeits demonstrates that even economically inefficient segments are not immune to forgery. A combination of expertise, technology, and experience is essential to identify even the most convincingly crafted counterfeits.
