Autumn Auctions 2026: Two Important Collections at Macho & Chlapovič

The 2026 autumn auctions at Macho & Chlapovič promise to be exceptional once again. We are delighted to present two important numismatic collections, each with its own distinctive character, story and perspective on the history of coinage. Auction #39 – Jaroslav Kokolus Collection – will be dedicated to Kremnitz ducats, double ducats and thaler issues. Auction #40, alongside our traditional selection of historical coins, will feature an extensive First Czechoslovak Republic collection assembled by a Czech collector and preserved within the same family for three generations. Both floor auctions will take place on 23 October 2026.

Two Important Collections in One Remarkable Autumn

For any auction house, it is a special moment to present a complete collection that has been carefully assembled over many years. We are therefore all the more delighted that this year we have been entrusted with not one, but two such important collections for our autumn auctions.

Behind each of them are years of collecting, searching, learning and carefully building the collection piece by piece. They are more than individual coins – they carry the stories of the people who sought them out, preserved them and, in some cases, passed them down to the next generation.

We therefore greatly appreciate the trust placed in us by the owners of these collections and are delighted that, through Macho & Chlapovič auctions, we can now share their stories with the wider collecting community.

The two collections could hardly be more different. The Jaroslav Kokolus Collection takes us into the world of Kremnitz ducats, double ducats and thaler issues. The second takes us to the era of the First Czechoslovak Republic while telling the story of a collecting tradition that endured across three generations of one family.

Auction #39 – Jaroslav Kokolus Collection

The dedicated Auction #39 – Jaroslav Kokolus Collection will present a remarkable group of historical coins associated with the Kremnitz Mint.

At the heart of the collection are Kremnitz ducats and double ducats, together with thaler denominations ranging from ¼ thaler to 4 thalers, dating from the late 16th to the early 18th century.

The collection includes coins of Rudolf II, Matthias II, Ferdinand II, Ferdinand III and Leopold I, as well as issues of Gabriel Bethlen and Francis II Rákóczi.

We have explored the scope and significance of the Jaroslav Kokolus Collection in connection with our previous auctions. Elizej Macho offers a closer look at the collection, the systematic approach behind its creation and the collector himself in the article “Jaroslav Kokolus: Collector or Investor?”.

The collection brings together important historical figures and periods through their connection with Kremnitz – one of the most important minting centres in Central Europe. Its ducats, double ducats and thaler issues span more than a century of coin production, encompassing a period that saw several important rulers succeed one another on the Hungarian throne.

For collectors and enthusiasts of Kremnitz coinage, Auction #39 will offer the chance to discover a selection of issues reflecting the rich history of the Kremnitz Mint.

Auction #39 – Jaroslav Kokolus Collection will take place on 23 October 2026.

Auction #40 – A Collection Preserved Across Three Generations

Auction #40 will tell a very different collecting story.

It will feature an extensive First Czechoslovak Republic collection assembled by a Czech collector and preserved within the same family for three generations.

Its provenance gives the collection a particularly personal dimension. It reflects the traditional way in which private collections were formed – through decades of searching for, acquiring and preserving individual coins. The passion for collecting was passed from one generation to the next, together with the collection itself.

Today, this long-standing family collecting story enters a new chapter as the coins are presented to the collecting community in Auction #40 at Macho & Chlapovič.

From the Celts and the Middle Ages to Czechoslovakia

Alongside this collection, the floor session of Auction #40 will offer our traditionally broad selection of historical coins spanning several periods.

The auction will include Celtic and medieval coins, Transylvanian coinage, Habsburg issues and Czechoslovakia, offering collectors a journey through the history of coinage from the earliest coins of our region through the Middle Ages and the Habsburg era to 20th-century Czechoslovak numismatics.

The floor session of Auction #40 will take place on 23 October 2026.
