An Exceptional 5 Ducat of Matthias II from the Prague Mint

This remarkable gold issue depicts Charles V, Ferdinand I and Maximilian II — rulers who played a key role in establishing the Habsburg dynasty among the most powerful ruling houses in European history.

The monarchs are portrayed in ceremonial attire and imperial robes, emphasizing dynastic continuity, authority and the legitimacy of Matthias II’s rule. The coin belongs among the most representative Habsburg issues of its period.

    A Symbol of Imperial Authority

The reverse features the monumental double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire — a symbol of unity, authority and imperial power.

The coin was struck by mintmaster Beneš Hübmer at the Prague Mint, which ranked among the most important mints in Central Europe during the reign of Matthias II.

Large multi-ducat issues of this type were intended for high-ranking officials and elites of the time as prestigious presentation pieces expressing the power and status of the Habsburg dynasty.
