Last week, the 72nd Congress of the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) was held in San Francisco, California. The event brought together 39 member companies from around the globe. Following the congress, attendees enjoyed an organised trip to Monterey, where they visited the renowned aquarium and vineyards. Our company was proudly represented by Elizej Macho.
The IAPN Congress provided participants with a forum to discuss key issues in the numismatic market and explore new trends. During the congress, three new IAPN members were approved, and the IAPN Annual Book Prize was awarded to 'Roman Imperial Coinage, Volume V.4: The Gallic Empire (AD 260-274),' published by Spink in London. As in previous years, IAPN members enjoyed the opportunity to connect with colleagues from around the world, enhancing professional cooperation and relationships. The congress also included meetings of the International Bureau for the Suppression of Counterfeit Coins (IBSCC), in which Elizej Macho is a member.
The International Bureau for the Suppression of Counterfeit Coins (IBSCC)
The IBSCC was established by the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) to fight against forgeries in every field of numismatics and against their dispersal into the numismatic market.
- Since members of the IAPN guarantee the authenticity of all of the coins they sell, the most important task of the IBSCC is to detect any new fakes appearing on the numismatic market and to immediately inform our members about them.
- For that reason we maintain an Early Warning System which alerts IAPN members about new fakes found in the market within a few hours. The IBSCC also maintains an archive where a large number of known fakes are published.
- The IBSCC also issues Certificates of Authenticity about coins which are submitted.
International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN)
The IAPN was constituted at a meeting held in Geneva in 1951 to which the leading international numismatic firms had been invited. There were 28 founding members. Today, there are more than 100 numismatic firms in the membership, across several continents and twenty-five countries.
Our company is the only one in our region to meet the rigorous criteria for admission to the International Association of Professional Numismatists.
IAPN CONGRESS 2025 in Budapest, Banska Stiavnica, Kremnica and Bratislava
The next congress will take place in June 2025 in Budapest, followed by an organised trip to Bratislava, the historical mining areas of central Slovakia, and the Kremnica Mint. Our company is collaborating with Nudelman Numismatica in organizing this event.
