The Tradition of Kremnitz Ducats and the Czechoslovak Gold Reserve
The minting of ducats in Kremnitz (Kremnica) dates back to the 14th century. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, Finance Minister Alois Rašín supported the introduction of a gold-based currency. His vision was to create a stable trade coin – the Czechoslovak ducat.
The government launched a national gold collection, inviting citizens to contribute coins, jewellery and other valuables. The collected gold was melted and used to mint Saint Wenceslas ducats, which became part of the national reserve. Some of the reserve was confiscated during WWII, while another portion was safely transported to London. In 1982, 18.4 tonnes of gold were repatriated – including original ducats. At the turn of the millennium, the CNB sold 465 coins, only 147 of which included a certificate – including the 10 Ducats 1938 now featured in Auction #37.
