Coinage of the Bishops and Archbishops of Olomouc - Volume I (1585 - 1664) | Suchomel, Hradil, Videman
Coinage of the Bishops and Archbishops of Olomouc – Volume I (1585–1664) Dan Suchomel, Filip Hradil, Jan Videman
The first volume of a long-awaited three-volume publication that comprehensively maps the coin and medal production of the bishops and archbishops of Olomouc. It loosely follows the renowned 1997 catalogue – Today hopelessly sold out and often referred to among collectors as the "bible" of coins minted in the Olomouc region – and significantly expands it with new findings, previously unknown coinage types and variants, and important archival data.
This volume covers the period from 1585 to 1664 and focuses on three key figures:
- Stanislav Pavlovský of Pavlovice (1579–1598) – medals featuring the bishop's portrait and coat of arms
- Cardinal Franz von Dietrichstein (1599–1636) – the most extensive chapter, featuring a detailed overview of silver and gold coinages, as well as medals
- Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria (1637–1662) – Moravian and extra-Moravian coinage and medals
In addition to the catalogue itself, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the episcopal minting privilege from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, a list of mintmasters, descriptions of legends and inscriptions on the coins, the coat of arms of the
Bishopric of Olomouc, and an overview of denominations and written sources. The catalogue section is supplemented by the representation of rare types in both public and private collections.
The publication is richly illustrated with high-quality visual documentation from leading domestic and foreign institutions (including the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, the National Museum, the Moravian Moravian Museum, and others). The foreword was written by the Archbishop of Olomouc and Metropolitan of Moravia, Mons. Josef Nuzík.
Co-published by the Regional Museum in Olomouc, the Czech Numismatic Society (Kroměříž branch), and Palacký University Olomouc. Hardback, 1st edition, 2026 ISBN 978-80-244-6768-9
An essential reference guide for collectors, numismatists, and researchers interested in Moravian coinage and ecclesiastical history.
