    The Perth Mint Australia

The Perth Mint, based in Perth, is Australia’s national mint. The history of The Perth Mint dates back to the Australian gold rush of the late 19th century.

At that time, it was established as one of the three Australian branches of The Royal Mint. Its original purpose was to process gold from the rich deposits of Western Australia and to mint coins for the British Empire. Over time, The Perth Mint became one of the world’s most prestigious producers of gold, silver, and platinum, including renowned bullion coins such as the Kangaroo and Kookaburra series. Today, the mint is owned and operated by the Government of Western Australia, which guarantees the quality and purity of its precious metal products.

The Perth Mint is also well known for its innovations in bullion coin minting. In 2012, it issued the world’s first coin featuring a holographic 3D effect. It is one of the few mints globally to offer fully integrated services, ranging from mining and refining to the final distribution of products. With its long-standing history, reputation for quality, and commitment to innovation, The Perth Mint remains one of the most important players in the global investment gold and silver market.

    Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coins

Gold Kangaroo investment coins are among the most renowned products of The Perth Mint, the prestigious Australian mint. Also known as “Gold Nugget” coins, they rank among the most sought-after gold coins worldwide thanks to their exceptional purityoutstanding minting quality, and iconic design.

The Kangaroo coins were originally introduced in 1986 as Gold Nugget coins and were redesigned in 1989 to feature the kangaroo motif, one of the most recognisable symbols of Australia. Since then, the coins have featured a new kangaroo design each year, making them particularly attractive not only to investors but also to gold coin collectors.

Gold Kangaroo coins are struck from 24-carat gold (99.99% purity) and are available in several sizes: 1 ounce (31.1 g), 1/2 ounce (15.55 g), 1/4 ounce (7.78 g), and 1/10 ounce (3.11 g). One of the key strengths of Gold Kangaroo coins is that they are fully backed by the Australian government, meaning the gold purity and quality are government-guaranteed, a distinction that sets them apart from many other gold coins worldwide.

    Coin Design

On the obverse (front) of the Kangaroo investment coins is a portrait of the British monarch. Until 2022, the coins featured Queen Elizabeth II, while from 2023 onwards, they depict King Charles III. In addition to the portrait, the obverse includes the inscription “ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA” (or “CHARLES III AUSTRALIA” on newer issues). Each gold coin also displays its legal tender face value, corresponding to the coin’s size.

The reverse side features a kangaroo, with a design that changes every year. The reverse also includes the coin’s name AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO, the gold purity 9999 GOLD, the year of issue, and the weight, depending on the coin’s size.
