    Note

Plans for a vigorous campaign in the summer of 1719 were prepared , by which Russia troops would be sailed from Finland to attak the Swedish coastline. The hero of Gangut, General-Amiral Feoder Apraxin, was given the command of the Russian Navy in the Baltic. The campaign took the Swedes by surprise, and they could not stop the amphibious onslaught, the Russians having near mastery of the seas. On 4 June 1719 a naval battle took place in the Baltic Sea between the islands of Osel (Saaremaa) and Gotland. All three swedish ships were captured. Scratch
