10 Eur 2015 - Ľudovít Štúr
Ľudovít Štúr (28 October 1815 – 12 January 1856) – linguist, journalist, poet, literary critic, historian, teacher and politician – was the leader of the Slovak national revival in the 19th century. His works and activities made him one of the most significant figures and reformers in the modern history of central Europe. Štúr was the principal codifier of the modern Slovak literary language and published two linguistic works: Nárečja slovenskuo alebo potreba písaňja v tomto nárečí (“The Slovak dialect or the necessity to write in this dialect”) and Nauka reči slovenskej (“The Theory of the Slovak language”). He established the idea of an autonomous Slovak nation and became the chief figure of the emerging Slovak national movement. During the 1848/49 Revolution in Hungary, Štúr together with Jozef Miloslav Hurban led the political and military fight for recognition of Slovak rights and for an autonomous Slovakia in Hungary. He strove to adapt western European ideas of society to Slovak circumstances and conditions.
